Renting a Car vs a Scooter in Bali: Which Should You Choose?

Scooters are the iconic way to get around Bali, but they are not right for everyone. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose between a car and a scooter for your trip.

Cost

A scooter is cheaper per day, but the gap narrows when you factor in the whole picture. Split between two to four people, a car often works out at a similar cost per person — while keeping everyone dry, comfortable and together.

Safety

This is the big one. Scooter accidents are the most common cause of tourist injuries in Bali, especially among riders with little experience on busy, unfamiliar roads. A car puts a protective shell, seatbelts and airbags between you and the traffic. If you are travelling with children, are not a confident rider, or simply want peace of mind, a car is the safer choice by a wide margin.

Comfort and weather

Bali is hot, and the wet season brings sudden, heavy downpours. A car gives you air conditioning, shelter from the rain and a comfortable space for long drives to the north or east of the island. On a scooter, a tropical shower means pulling over and waiting it out.

Luggage and groups

Carrying suitcases, surfboards, shopping or a family is simply impractical on a scooter. A car — particularly an MPV or SUV — handles airport runs, multi-stop day trips and group travel with ease.

Where a scooter still wins

For a solo traveller staying in one area such as Canggu or Ubud, who is comfortable riding and only needs to nip to cafés and the beach, a scooter is nimble and fun, and parks anywhere. Heavy traffic is also easier to filter through on two wheels.
