What you need to drive in Bali

Bring your passport, your national driving licence and an International Driving Permit. The IDP is the one people forget: police checkpoints do ask for it, and your insurance is void without a licence valid in Indonesia. Get it from your home motoring authority before you fly — it cannot be issued in Bali.

Traffic drives on the left. Scooters filter constantly on both sides, so check mirrors before every move and expect vehicles to emerge from side lanes without stopping. Fuel is widely available; Pertamina stations take cash and most take cards.
